White Shirt Update

I wanted to fix the elastic in the sleeves of that white shirt I made last week. I think I figured out how to alter the pattern so there is more sleeve definition, but I can't do that to the already sewn shirt. The elastic though was definately too tight in the sleeves. Should have trusted the pattern! I just unpicked a little of the casing under the arm and took out the elastic. I tried the shirt on again, and it REALLY changed how it fits! It not so tight looking across the bust now. I think I might just leave the elastic out! I stil want to add back darts though. And, of course, when hemming it, my bobbin ran out with about two inches left to sew. I don't have enough white to wind another bobbin. I have the next shade of white, but it's definately 'off-white' when next to the white shirt! And, I don't like the hem. I folded it twice and presses, and zigzagged over the folded edge. It's much too stiff for the shirt and it looses that billowy feeling. Any suggestions? The cotton really frays so it needs something.

I'm thinking you need to hand sew the hem - anything machine sewn is going to be too stiff for the fabric. Sorry - that's probably not what you wanted to hear...

This has nothing to do with your post today (sorry - I do like reading your blog), but about a question you'd asked on another blog RE: polio vaccines, etc... As an older person who lined up at the national guard armory for polio vaccine, I am so thankful mom took us. I went to school with a couple of kids who weren't vaccinated and actually had polio and it was heartbreaking to see what they went through on a day to day basis.

Another vaccine response :D
My husband is a doc-in-training, so I might be a little biased. But having studied genetics and all, I'm a firm believer in vaccines. From a (cold) statistical point of view, less children die via the vaccination route. And as I'm sure you know, we don't have many of those bothersome diseases around anymore thanks to vaccines. The 'crunchies' are lucky that the majority of us are vaccinated, otherwise they would be experiencing the diseases first-hand. It seems to me you can find something to get hung up about everything if you look for it. On a side note, my son's pediatrician always hands me an information/potential side-effect sheet for each vaccine, which I find very helpful.
